though covered with mellow soil on flat land. The ridges are rocky. We are camped at the east base of the Paulina Mts. within 2 miles of Pinus ponderosa. Small craters, not well preserved, are numerous. I counted 20 along the east base of the Paulinas. Just NW of Christmas Lake we passed a row of 5 or 6 small but fresh and perfect craters in the midst of a broken lava bed. Another group was passed later. Many craters appear to [[strikethrough]] our [[/strikethrough]] the east of us. The Maury Mts. show in the north as a low, blue ridge.

Struck water first 20 miles north of Christmas Lake, again at a ranch 4 miles farther along & no more except alkali water in the nearly dry slough where we camp. It is said to be 14 miles beyond to the next water.

Shot one coyote & saw 5 others. S. mollis & Tamias pictus are common all across.

Grass is luxurient and ungrazed most of the way across. It stands loaded with seed and looks as though it had never been touched. In places the sagebrush has been burned and the ground is covered with good bunch grass in place of it.
