[[underlined]] Des Chutes Valley [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] June 26 [[/underlined]] Rained all night and till noon. Did not break camp till 3PM & then climbed over the top of ridge about 8 miles and camped in the only strip of pine timber on the road to the Dalles. Cold & windy & roads very wet & muddy. Our camp is about 14 miles from Prineville & about 1000 feet above.

Left S. mollis in the valley and struck S. beldingi on the ridge.

[[underlined]] June 27 [[/underlined]] Cleared up but ground & roads still wet and mud deep and sticky. Started late to let the roads dry but had to wade through mud all the forenoon.

Crossed Willow Creek and followed down Hay Creek to Trout Creek and up it a mile and camped at the bridge.

Left the timber on starting and passed through open, sagebrush country with long ridges flat topped mesas and deep creek gulches. From places we could see the Canyon of The Des Chutes & most of the way were in plain view of Mt. Hood, Adams, Jefferson, the Three Sisters & [[Matcleus?]] [[Matolius?]] Buttes.

The first clear day we have had for 2 weeks.

Came 30 miles.

Barometer read 3950 at last camp, 1550 at Trout Creek Camp.

Transcription Notes:
On review, think it's Matolius Buttes not Matcleus, but needs to be verified
