[[underlined]] The Dalles [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] June 30. [[/underlined]] [[strikethrough]] Traveled [[/strikethrough]]
Traveled down hill most of the way for the 17 miles to The Dalles where were arrived at 11:30. Got mail & supplies and moved down the valley and then up on the ridge and camped about 5 miles south of town.

Aneroid read 1600 feet at Nansene in morning, — 200 at The Dalles, and 800 at camp on ridge.

[[underlined]] July 1 [[/underlined]] Remained at camp all day, writing reports and getting a few birds.

[[underlined]] July 2 [[/underlined]] Came back to The Dalles and camped at Mr. Snipes ranch close to town on the west side. Set traps on the river flat.

Loring arrived

[[underlined]] July 3 [[/underlined]] Caught only Perognathus & a Peromyscus Took up traps and crossed to north side of Columbia river and camped at Gilmores ranch a mile back from river by some little lakes. Set traps, shot a bat & a skunk.

[[underlined]] July 4 [[/underlined]] Caught only Perognathus & a Fiber & a Thomomys. Saw several Arctomys. Tramped up to the canyon above the Cascades where the Indians are camped. Was over a large part of the valley without finding signs of Perodipus. The sandy flats are admirably adapted to them but I doubt if they occur north of the Columbia.

Sand blows and drifts steadily all day. The wind seems always to blow from the west.

Transcription Notes:
Final review Jen LC 9 Oct 2017: FYI, "fiber" is a reference to Castor fiber, the European beaver [and yes, there were some in the U.S. around the area he was in] Reviewed. I inserted a comma after morning in last sentence of June 30 entry. Everything else was good. - Perry Wilson 10/08/17.
