[[underlined]] Columbia River Valley [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] July 21 [[/underlined]] Caught only Onychomys & Peromyscus but saw lots of Perognathus tracks & holes & shot S. mollis & Tamias pectus. Started at 7 AM in a northerly course & traveled till noon over a long stretch of sandy road, making at least 15 miles. Then met a man driving a bunch of horses and learned that it was still 12 miles to the river at White Bluffs Ferry where the road lead. Could see the river about 5 miles to our north and see where it came out of the Priest Rapids. Decided to turn back, as the trip to the river would cost us another day which can not be spared now. The river appeared to be 400 [[strikethough]] or 50 [[/strikethrough]] feet lower than we at the point of turning back and in a wide part of the sandy valley. All of the Sonoran plants of the Columbia Valley lower down were common and most of the mammals. No Perodipus tracks or holes were seen though good sand for them extends all along. Perognathus are numerous.

Water was found at but one point where a fine creek boils out of a clay gulch about 8 miles north of our morning camp and some 15 miles south of the river.

Returned to Tub Spring and camped. Made about 30 miles over very bad road. Hot & dusty & sandy.

Aneroid read 2100 at morning camp, 1150 at the creek, 1200 where we turned back &
