[[underlined]] May 13 [[/underlined]] Caught 2 species of Neotoma & some Peromyscus & a Perognathus - Our best team horse bloated and died so we put Nellie in the buckboard & went on. Followed up narrow valley among foothills in a S.E. course to summit of low range at about 10 miles from Eastgate. Then down south slope about 5 miles and camped at old station where a gulch had been dammed to hold water. Found enough rain water in the pool for the horses, so camped at 2 P.M. & set traps & made up skins.

Aneroid read 5550 at Westgate, 6800 on summit, 6200 at camp - Struck Transition Zone at 6200 feet and camped at its lower edge. It is about 8 miles wide over the range, is marked by Artimisia tridentata as a dominant shrub, by A. arbuscola, by Juniperus & Pinus monophylla. and by absence of Atriplex Grayia, Sarcobatus, Eurotia, Artimesia spinescens & Tetradymia.
