In addition to the above items, channels for communicating intelligence are required to transmit any information not contemplated prior to take-off and which is not available from instruments and indicators.

One of the major problems in establishing facilities is the determination of the essential (or desirable) items of the above information at each stage of the flight to accomplish a given mission in a given aircraft.

4. [[underline]] Sources and Channels of Information [[/underline]]. There are two primary sources of the information discussed above: facilities located within the aircraft and not dependent on cooperation of ground facilities, and cooperative systems involving both ground and air facilities. In the first category, for example, are the standard flight instruments, engine indicators and other conventional devices relating to the mechanics of flight, as well as such devices as airborne radar, integrating computers (API and GPI), and clearance indicators.

In the second category, the cooperative ground sources are in part organizational. These organizations include those for weather reporting and forecasting, traffic control, approach control and airport control. These organizations may make use of ground based equipment as an aid in solving the control problem and may then communicate instructions to the aircraft. The equipments which may be used include ground radar for weather observation or surveillance and control of aircraft, ground based direction finders, ground based interrogators or airborne beacons.

Finally, ground facilities may be provided for direct use by the pilot as required. These facilities include homing navigation aide (beacons, ranges)
