Such intermittent operation minimizes fatigue and permits the pilot to confine his attention to the essential operations involved in each stage of the flight. The fourth category comprises instruments for direct graphic presentation of the situation, such as map-type radar, television or facsimile. Finally, for completeness, one must include devices for direct aural presentation of verbal instructions.

5. [[underline]] Division of Flight Pattern into Zones [[/underline]]. The establishment of flight pattens is governed by two broad considerations, those relating to the flight as a whole and those more specific considerations relating to particular operations at different stages of the flight. The general considerations include the accomplishment of a mission with maximum safety, speed, and economy of fuel, in view of the characteristics of the aircraft.

When the specific considerations are analyzed, it is found that aircraft flight generally divides into three discreet [[and here is a handwritten note]] etc [[/and here is a handwritten note]] operational zones; the en route zone, the approach zone and the landing - take-off zone. These divisions are convenient, not only because the coincide with established operating procedures, but also because they differ markedly in the amount and precision of the information required and the speed with which it must be used. A fourth zone, lying outside of the scope of this report, is the terminal action zone within which specific military action is taken against an objective.

The landing-takeoff zone is defined as the region surrounding the center of an airport, including areas suitable for landing and take-off, within which the landing and take-off functions are accomplished. The approach zone is defined as the region, immediately outside the landing zone, within which aircraft are assembled and oriented prior to landing and subsequent to take-off.
