The en route zone is defined as the region, outside approach zones, within which the aircraft follows the route between terminals. 

In the following paragraphs it is proposed to analyse the functions associated with each of these zones from the standpoint of the basic framework set up in the preceding paragraphs, that is, flight pattern, information required, information sources, channels, presentation and use. As an aid to following this study, the basic elements of the framework are illustrated in Figure 1.
