Objective of military aviation is to accomplish a mission.
Objectives of the mission.
   Point to point transport
   Reconnaissance
   Military action at an objective
Objective of current study is to make operations progressively more independent of weather and darkness.
The path in space and time followed by aircraft will be defined as the "flight pattern".

Requirements for the carrying out of a mission.
   1. Facilities for following a prescribed flight pattern
   2. Facilities that will enable a voluntary departure from the prescribed flight pattern, or permit a return to an established pattern after an involuntary deviation.

Circumstances necessitating deviations from the prescribed flight pattern are
   1. Changes in weather
   2. Enemy activity
   3. Change of mission en route
   4. Equipment failure

There are two classes of information provided to the aircraft crews.
   1. Training and briefing before take-off
   2. Information conveyed to aircraft after take-off

The information passed to the aircraft after take-off falls roughly into two categories:
   1. That enabling the pilot to fly a prescribed flight pattern
     a. Position coordinates, such as latitude, longitude and altitude.
     b. Angular coordinates, such as bearing, heading and attitude.
