off the runway and wreck his ship. Note that faults were: Taking off with radio bad, taking off at such time as to arrive at destination after dark, faulty navigation, lack of consideration of general weather and flying conditions. I don't know what you can do toward helping our students to avoid such errors in judgment, but certainly anything that can be done is important.

7. [[underlined]] Passports [[/underlined]]: I found that having obtained my passport in advance did not expedite this matter in the least. It is necessary for the passports of all passengers and crew to clear through Army G-2. The most expeditious manner of handling this is to let G-2 do all of the work (incidentally, coordination in passport matters was very poor).

[[underlined]] Suggestion [[/underlined]]: Anyone starting on a similar trip should wait until they talk to Colonel Olds before applying for passport, visas, or the like.

8. [[underlined]] Inoculations [[/underlined]]: The Army requires immunization within the last year against smallpox, typhoid, para-typhoid, yellow fever, typhus, tetanus, pneumonia, and perhaps others, depending on the conditions existing at the time of the trip. Since several of these require two or three injections at the intervals of from one to three weeks, it is desirable that anyone contemplating travel in the East should start these inoculations as far ahead as possible in order that they should be complete before leaving the country. Most of these inoculations can be given at any Army Medical Station.

9. [[underlined]] Offices and Clerical Staff [[/underlined]]: As you no doubt have guessed, I have spent many hours waiting in offices since I have been here and have had a good chance to compare Washington office practices with ours in Albuquerque. I have been very much gratified to find that ours is not nearly so bad as I thought, or else Washington's is much worse. The only concrete things I have learned in this respect are that we should have a little more clerical help than we have had in the past and that we are on the right track and should continue improving things as we can.

[[underlined]] General [[/underlined]]: The above is a resume of such information as I have been able to acquire while here. I expect to leave for the East very shortly. Under the circumstances, I cannot make any estimate as to the time of my return. Will send you further reports as possible

Sincerely,

J. D. Mountain.
