Jan. 5, 1944 Misamari

Airplane was supposed to be finished with 100 hour inspection at one o'clock but did not get off the ground until five. Hydraulic pressure on auxiliary system was too high. [[strikethrough]] xxxxxxxxx [[/strikethrough]] Finally decided that the unloading valve was out of order and changed it. Had to rob one from another ship

flew from five pm to 6 pm. Gave the ship the best engineer testing I knew how to do, but we sure do need a check list ant authorized procedure for making engineering tests.
[[underlined]] 1/6/44 [[/underlined]] In the evening, discussed with Major Page means for expediting program. Seems difficult to get started with the local chief pilot. He fails to show up and gets assigned to other duties. Decided we needed additional authority for program so decided to work out definite proposal for Conference of Chief Pilots to be held here at Misamiri. Expect to take stuff up to Sector on Saturday. to show top Col. Hardin- ^[[Worked up enough outline of conference]]
During the day of the sixth, flew all day standardizing procedures. Made about 15 landings with normal approach in effort to standardize C-46 normal landings. Found that could put ship on runway at any airspeed form 85 to 110 MPH provided that [[underlined]] attitude [[/underlined]] and power were adjusted to give rate of descent of a little less than 500 ft/min/ [[strikethrough]] xxxxxxx [[/strikethrough]] Pricipal difficulty in coming in at low rate of descent as 300 fpm is that you have to drag in from a long distance back low over obstructions. To overcome this, I determined the MP at 2300 RPM required for a rate of descent of 350fpm at several different airspeeds. With this knowledge, the procedure is to [[strikethrough]] xxxxx [[/strikethrough]] come in at any desired height above obstructions until near the end of the runway. Then dive down to a height of 50 feet or so, (the airspeed will not build up much with full flaps and gear down). Witht the MP set at the [[strikethrough]] xxxxx [[/strikethrough]] value required for the airspeed at which the landing is to be made, simply [[strikethrough]] xxxxx [[/strikethrough]] slow down to that airspeed and hold it. The plane will go onto the runway at the desired rate of descent. At 350 fpm rate of descent Manifold pressure ^[[15" landing speed 85 MPH.
