Prof. S. F. Baird,
 Representative of Smithsonian Institution.

Sir:
I inclose herewith a statement of the building fund, showing liabilities incurred, and to be incurred, to render the building and grounds complete and perfect and to maintain the same in such condition throughout the exhibition.
The total amount necessary for the purpose, as will be seen, is $105.715,00--which will require, besides the $75.000 heretofore assigned, an additional contribution to the building fund, by the several main contributing departments, of $30.000-- the $715, being already in hand as a drawback on A. Doan & Co's contract.
I shall therefore request the honorable, the Secretary of the Treasury to transfer a [[underlined]] Pro Bata [[/underlined]] portion of this sum from the appropriation for the Smithsonian Institution-- amounting to $4322.56--to the heading of building fund, to be disbursed in accordance with the accompanying statement.
No further demands under building fund are anticipated under existing appropriations.
     Respectfully, Your Obedient Servant,
       [[signed]] S. C. Lyford [[/signed]]
           Chairman of Building Committee,
                    and Chairman of Board.
