Prof. S. F. Baird,
 Representative of Smithsonian Institution.

Sir:
I have the honor to request you to communicate your views on the subject of a proper form for a uniform label for general use by all the departments of the government in the government building and in the government grounds. It has occurred to me that uniformity in this matter is desirable, in order that no particular department may, by undue placarding, be made more prominent in the governmental exhibit than its importance would demand, and would serve to place before the visitors each department upon an equal footing with all the rest.
As these labels must have the common similarity of being in three languages,- English, French, and German,- my view in regard to uniformity of size, style of printing, &c., is as above indicated.
I should be glad if the plan is adopted. If approved by you, will you please furnish me with a sample for your department, indicative of size, and general style.
      Respectfully, Your Obedient Servant,
        [[signed]] S. C. Lyford [[/signed]]
                         Chairman of Board.
