Prof. S. F. Baird,
    Representative of Smithsonian Institution.

Sir:
Acknowledging receipt of your letter of 4th inst., I would state that your views and mine are identical upon the subject-matter of said letter, and by reference to my letter to the director general sent you on 20 inst., It will be seen that I do not touch the point raised.
Private contributions should of right participate in the competition for prizes.
How far private contributions should be brought into the government building to the exclusion of the agricultural and treasury departments from the additional space desired by them, may be a point on which those departments might desire to be heard. I drop this as a suggestion however, and not as indicating any opinion on the subject.
       Respectfully, Your Obedient Servant,
     [[signed]] S. C. Lyford [[/signed]]
                Chairman of Board.
