Prof S.F. Baird
   Halifax, Nova Scotia
     Sir:
Your letter of August 19 is at hand. I cannot promise that I shall be able to render you all the assistance you may require to extricate yourself from the financial embarrassments which the Smithsonian and Food Fishes participation in the International Exhibition has entailed upon you, as your letter of 19th/ does not give any idea of the total amount necessary to settle up your arrearages. Before replying definitely to yours of 19th/ therefore I would be pleased to know what sum in gross is needed to settle up all outstanding bills against the Smithsonian and Food Fishes participation properly chargeable to Centennial funds.
 Respctfully
   Your obedient servant
