Dear Sir-

On the 8th Sept. last I forwarded to you an account in favor of the North Penna. R.R. Co, $52.50,for freight and Charges on Consignment of marble from Rutland Vt. in April last. This account was informally returned to me supposing that the understanding with Mr Wilson was that all dues to the N.P. RR would be remitted. I learn from Mr Ellis Clark Gen. Agt. of the Road that this proportion of the freight is only $7.90 viz the rate from Bethlehem Pa to Philadelphia and that the remainder ($44.60) is due the connecting lines between theirs and the point of shipment.
It will therefore be necessary to make an

account for this balance ($44.60) in favor of the N.P.R.R. Co. for settlement with its connecting lines who hold it responsible for their charges

Do you wish this account to be made up by me in the usual way or will you pay it from Smithsonian Institution funds.

The bill and Mr Clarks letter are enclosed for your information.

Very respectfully
