Prof. S. F. Baird

Dear Sir,

Referring to the list of seeds of American and other plants left by Sir Redmond Barry it may be stated that they could only be secured by employing a competent Botanist to collect them during the season of ripening; if they were seeds of commerce we could purchase them, but they are not for sale. I have, however, done what I could in way of exchange for the many things received by this Dept. from other Governmental exhibits, for our museum. This museum does not seem to have anything that it can furnish by way of exchange, so that I have been the more anxious to do what I could to reciprocate; I have sent various seeds and plants to Chile, Brazil, Japan, Victoria, New South Wales &c. and have many packages yet to dispatch. This has added much to my labors, also been a matter of expense for which there was no provision. I hope the Dept will do something now for itself, for the recent order
