Sir:

I have the honor to advise you that the Hon. Secretary of the Interior under date of December 30. 1875, authorized that extension of Mr. James G. Swan's appointment as a special agent for the collection of centennial objects in Washington Territory and British Columbia, so long as his services may be necessary, not, however, beyond the close of the present fiscal year, with the further distinct understanding that his salary shall be paid out of the sum of $7000. authorized, on the 16th of November last, to be expended by him.
