Your letter of the 20th instant in answer to my inquiries of the 10th instant, relative to the account of Stephen Bowers, amounting to $160- for services during April 1876. rendered in making ethnological collections on Santa Rosa Island, Cal. for the Centennial Exposition, is at hand.

I have the authority of the Secretary of the Interior only for the employment of Messrs Bessels, Powell, Powers, Schumaker and Swan, as Special Agents to make ethnological collections
