The soil is mainly sandy or of a gravelly clay.  There is little farming except small cotton fields.
West of Mineola the country becomes a little higher & more ridgy with more scrubby timber and a few miles east of Wills Point the prairie begins abruptly & with scrubby timber along streams is continuous to Dallas & Ft. Worth & beyond. West of Terrell the soil is black & hard & there is almost no timber. A few mesquites were seen on both sides of Terrell & a pair of [[strikethrough]] Mi [[/strikethrough]] [[underlined]] Scissor tails [[/underlined]] were seen just east of the town. A [[underlined]] Pileated [[/underlined]] woodpecker was seen just west of Long View.
[[underlined]] Geomys [[/underlined]] hills were seen at intervals all along from Little Rock to Marshall & west to the prairie.
