The Upper Sonoran is less strongly marked that I expected to find it at the south end of the Staked Plains. These are stretches of white soil full of scattered white limestone where there is noticably less mesquite than on the more common red soil. This may be purely due to difference in warmth of the two colors. It is at the very edge of the range of mesquite where a little difference would exclude it.
The sand dune strip begins some 40 miles west of Odessa & extends 15 or 20 miles to a little west of [[strikethrough]] Haneman [[/strikethrough]] Monehans.
The soil is drifting, yellow sand all in dunes & scooped out hollows, with thin vegetation of mesquite, dwarf oak, Artemisia filifolia etc. It is full of holes of Dipodomys, Perodipus & such sand lovers. Monahans is right in the lower part of the dunes & would be a good place for work. There are a few little houses where one could stay.

Transcription Notes:
Monehans is probably Monahans, as written in other places, but I left it as written.--thomasc
