[[underlined]] May 31 [[/underlined]]  Broke camp & followed up Tornillo Creek to Ernst's store.  Found no one there so helped ourselves to 2 boxes of corn, some canned goods, coffee, lard, sugar & a pair of shoe soles & used his tools to shoe some of the horses.  Left a bill of the goods on the counter & a note of explanation & pushed on west across the valley to the Chisos Mts.  Missed the "Dug Out" where we intended to camp for the night & had to go on to find Rock Springs.  After striking the foothills of the mts. the road is stony & steep & after entering the gulch it is up a dry wash that has not been travelled since the rains.  Up a bed of deep stony gravel with a steep grade makes hard pulling & at [[insert]]nearly[[/insert]] dark I sent Oberholser on to find the water, unloaded half of the load & pushed on up the wash by moonlight till 10 P.M., when we came to an old well with plenty of water down 40 feet.
