[[underline]] June 2 [[/underline]] Put a pair of half soles on my shoes which had worn through on the rough lava rocks. In P.M. went over the ridge west and down into the big gulch that comes in between this ridge & the big flat top ridge beyond. Found no water in the gulch, no roads or trails & little of interest. Didn't have time to go up the next slope. Came back around the south side of the mountain & didn't get to camp till 10 P.M.
Saw a white tail deer high up on the mountain & an old blacktail out on an open ridge on the south side, but failed to get either. Found many of the splendid big agavas in full flower & covered with honey bees, wasps, beetles & other insects & often visited by hummers & other birds. Found some bear sign. Saw a few Lepus holzneri, & one L. Texensis. Have concluded that the deer are in the foothills & open country mainly
