[[underline]] June 12 [[/underline]] Started up the big timbered ridge, but instead of following up the gulch to right of the spire (Cleopatras needle) kept to the south of it up the wide slope Found good traveling & could easily take a horse up this way to top of the ridge & plateau top of the mountain The best way to ride up would be up the wood road in the gulch farther south, then across the gulch beyond the road & up diagonally onto the shoulder, then back south to top of long ridge. Once up there is abundance of grass & water for camping & open country, wood & gulches. Lots of bear & deer but not much else in the way of game. One could ride horsback for miles over the top of the plateau & most if not all the way to the top of Mt. Emory.
We have not been to the top of Mt. Emory but have every reason to believe it is 9000 feet high. The ridge opposite is about 8500 & Emory certainly runs 500 feet higher. It is a rather barren peak so we had no good reason for going over on that side of the gulch. Killed a fine old buck of the little white tail & camped in gulch at 8000 feet. Oberholser & Fuertes came along at dusk.
