[[underlined]] June 16 [[/underlined]] Broke camp in P.M. & started down the slope, went past Rock Spring & down on the edge of valley to the Dugout - an old spring of poor water at 3900 feet. There is no shade here, only low brush & mesquites.

[[underlined]] June 17 [[/underlined]] One of the mules & Fuerte's horse left us in the night so we could not go to the store for supplies. I went on horseback but could get only the mail. On returning found the horses had not yet been caught so tried to ride the other mule after them - with poor success. Then started Surber after them again on Fiddlesticks.

[[underlined]] June 21 [[/underlined]] The horses have not yet been found although 2 men have been hunting for them & have trailed them about 20 miles north of here. This is the first time I ever left the horse hunting to others The result is much delay & bother.
