nearly vertical as also are the walls of the canyon. There is apparently no place where either cliff or canyon wall can be climbed to the top without going 5 miles back from the [[river?]] to get on the plateau or 5 or 6 miles up the canyon to climb its walls. From the escarpment the big open valley, mainly hot & barren desert, stretches away down the river & into the rough badland country toward the Chisos Mts. Its barrenness is relieved by the Mexican farms of corn, melons etc - along the valley near the mouth of Tertingo Cr. & by mesquites & cottonwoods along the river flats.

The Canyon is impressive on account of its sheer walls & narrowness - often apparently higher than wide & with walls leaning in as commonly as out. At present the river is low & we waded, swam & climbed along shore up 4 or 5 miles into the canyon - to where the walls were lower & less sheer - not over 1000 feet.
