[[underline]] July 2 [[/underline]] - My Thomomys proved to be only Cratogeomys.

Started early & with good road pushed north about 30 miles & camped 6 miles north of the Butcher Knife Ranch, near the W. base of the Elephant Mesa and only 36 miles south of [[strikethrough]] Maralt [[/strikethrough]] Alpine. Left the Corrazone Mts. behind us & passed near the west base of Nine Point - a great flat topped ^[[lava]] plateau standing probably 2000 feet above its base level & with a few scattered trees, apparently junipers oaks or nut pines, on its top. The gulches around it have no timber & apparently no water. It is a dry, uninhabited looking mountain & the scattered trees on top did not promise anything worth going up after. It is very similar to the Elephant Mesa & several other old flat topped lava buttes.

About 15 miles north of Nine Point we passed some 6 or 8 miles distant along the west side of Santiago Peak,  a sharp, roof like peak of lava rising from a big base of flat topped shoulders. A few scattered junipers cover the high,
