Maravillas Valley south of Marathon) are unusual.  The ground cracks open when dry & the rains instead of flooding & killing vegetation sink into the ground & is held for plant growth.  The usual amount of alkali found on playas also seems to be lacking.  I can find no trace of old lake shore lines around the margins of these basins.

Barometer read at Doby Wall camp in morning 3900, at lunch camp (13 m.) 4350, over high part of mesa 4600, at Butcherknife Ranch 4550, at camp 4700.

Near the Butcherknife Ranch on mesa at 4600 feet we met the first real trees of Upper Sonoran zone -[[Microrhammus?]], Dasylerian, Yucca rigida and Corvus cryptoleucus, Sturnella, & Speotyto.  The mesquites become dwarfed & many of the lower Sonoran plants become scarce or drop out.  Still it is a fair mixture of both zones to our camp at 4700 -
