[[underlined]] July 3 [/underlined]] Did not get an early start & came only about 20 miles, & camped about 16 miles from Alpine. Were delayed an hour & a half by a hard rain that flooded the creeks.
Passed near the west base of the Elephant Mesa & followed up narrow valleys to Butcherknife Creek & up it for 8 or 10 miles & then up other gulches into a more hilly & ridgy country among oaks & junipers.
At the west base of Elephant Mesa is another grassy basin valley with several ranches on it, then for a long way the valley is overstocked, barren & almost grassless & water is more common. Farther up the country is fenced into smaller pastures, not over stocked & while supporting a good lot of cattle & horses it is excellent grass country.
Most of the lower Sonoran plants drop out as we reached the 5000 foot level just after passing the Elephant Mesa & at our noon camp at 5350 we were in pure upper Sonoran. At night camp at 5600 in oaks & junipers.
