[[underlined]] July 4 [/underlined]] - Remained at camp all of forenoon to hunt & make up specimens. After noon started for Alpine & followed up gradual slopes & over ridges until we reached a summit at 6300 feet - began to go down again then over another ridge at 6200 & down into Alpine Valley & camped in edge of it 4 miles from Alpine at 5700 feet. Came past the west base of the Ord Mts. which have considerable scrub timber & appear to be about 7500 feet high. For most of the way we came over grassy ridges & through narrow valleys among scattered scrub oak & juniper. The rock is all lava with lots of canyons & cliffs. At the edge of the valley that Alpine is in we came out on a high escarpment & then down a steep grade to the valley bottom (500 feet).

At about 10 miles from Alpine the good grass stopped as we struck a region where there had been no rain for a long time. A good shower struck Alpine Valley yesterday but the grass is scarce & dried up.
