[[underline]]July 15[[/underline]] - Got an early start & came down the canyon to Ft. Davis Got our mail, sent letters & packages Got supplies, bought a bear & lynx skins. Fuertes left for Cloudcroft & Oberholser for the Staked Plains. With the outfit & Surber I started for Toyah on the Toyah & Pesos road down Limpia Canyon. Traveled about 9 miles & camped in the open canyon by a creek of pure, cool running water. The water runs under ground half the way & so keeps the character of a spring brook. Grass is coming up fresh & green from the late rains & the country looks like spring. There are big slopes & plains strips all smooth & green & big brown rim rock cliffs along the canyon. It is all lava. We are mostly below trees from Ft. Davis down except cottonwoods along the creek & a few oaks on cold slopes in gulches. Saw a few of the big Agavas on the ridges. The Yuccas are a slender stemmed little tree 6 feet high - also stricta
