[[underlined]]July 29[[/underlined]] - Broke camp in P.M. at the Pecos River Camp, went into Carlsbad & got supplies for the trip to Mts. & then out 3 miles S.W. to City water pump & camped. This pump is at a big well (70 feet deep) where good water is found in abundance & pumped into stand pipes for the city supply. It is called Dark Canyon water because the well is near the ^[[dry]] wash leaning down from Dark Canyon that comes from the Guadelupies. In evening a lot of bats came in to the reservoir of good water at pump & I killed 4 as they came over our camp from the hills to the west, probably from limestone caves in the hills several miles distant. They kept coming from soon after [[strikethrough]] dark [[/strikethrough]] sundown until too dark to shoot & the last of them must have come from a long distance.
