[[underlined]]July 30[[/underlined]] - Followed the Dark Canyon road west over open valley about 8 miles to the first ridge, that the canyon cuts through & then up through low canyons with stratified limestone walls & broad open gulches among long ridges & treeless slopes. Stopped for lunch by a high cliff about 4 miles from mouth of canyon & shot S. grammerus in the act of gathering walnuts & cactus fruit. About 4 miles farther on we passed Mosbies Spring - a sheep camp & springs of good water, then camped some 6 miles farther (about 25 miles west of Carlsbad) in the open gulch by a rain pool of stale old water full of tadpoles. Fortunately I found a basin of better water in the limestone above & we had rather a pleasant camp.
