[[underline]]July 31[[/underline]] - Continued up the wash in more open country with gradual rise among ridges & hills to a stock ranch at the foot of the Mts. where we stopped for lunch. Found good wateer in well but only a dog at home, seems to be a goat or sheep ranch. The places[[?]] is important as working the change from Lower to Upper Sonoran zone. At Carlsbad the aneroid read 3800 (700 feet too high), at last nights camp 4600, & at this ranch 5200. (actual altitude 4500). Here we struck more juniperus virginianas, 2 species of Quercus, ceanothus, Garrea [[?]], Arbutus, and farther up the slope at 6000 (aneroid) the first juniperus pachyphlaea & Pinus edulis [[strikethrough]] began [[/strikethrough]] appeared ^[[insertion]] on N.E. slopes [[/insertion]] & at 6200 a few P. ponderosa were seen in gulches. 
The slope up the mts. is steep & rocky with much bare limestone until we reached the top of first ridges at 6200 - thence open woods of oak, juniper & nut pine splendid grass, big agavas & all fresh & green with many flowers
