We camped at a big rain pool on top of the plateau probably 5 mi. east of summit [[strikethrough]] but [[/strikethrough]] - aneroid 6300. About 40 miles (by road) west of Carlsbad. We are 2 or 3 miles north of Dark Canyon & about 14 miles north of the Texas line. Found good fresh rainwater in rock pools 1/4 of a mile below camp in gulch. Pitched tent under big checker bark juniper in orchard like forest of scrub oaks, junipers & pines. Good red soil over limestone rock. Much rain has made grass & flowers fresh & green.
Birds are numerous. Deer tracks common.

[[underline]]Aug.1.[[/underline]] - Sent Surber back to Carlsbad for Fuertes. Went over to edge of a branch of Dark Canyon & watched the slopes for deer. Did not shoot birds for fear of scaring out game.
