The canyons are deep & rocky & sharp bottomed. McKittereck opens to the east through great walls & cliffs, West Dog Canyon swings from west to north & splits the ridges west of us as a big, open gulch 1000 feet deep.
The heaviest timber, of douglas spruce & yellow pine fills the heads of the canyons & covers the cold slopes, becoming more extensive & dense toward Guadalupe Peak. The bottoms of the canyons & gulches are largely filled with maple & birch?; [[strikethrough]] & [[/strikethrough]] oaks, nut pines & junipers cover the north exposed & open slopes. Agavas, yuccas, shin oak, ceanathus & Circocarpus form a stiff chaparral over many of the open slopes & especially the steepest & rockiest. There is no ^[[insertion]] permanent [[/insertion]] water in the canyons except low down in those reaching east & ^[[insertion]] the little [[/insertion]] spring at the miners camp. Some pools & rock basins remain after the late rains & some of the largest of these tanks are almost permanant.
