[[underlined]] Aug. 25 [[/underlined]] Water gave out at our tanks & we have to move camp. Returned 10 miles to north El Paso Gap & camped by muddy rain pools at 6200 feet.

[[underlined]] Aug. 26 [[/underlined]] - Took saddle horse & rode down valley about 12 miles west for zones Went through the gap & down Dog Canyon to junction with West Dog Canyon & on to Gap leading to big valley to west. Followed half way down the gap to 5000 feet & then climbed ridge for view over country.

Found Larrea & whole set of Lower Sonoran plants in wide valley part of Dog Canyon about 5 miles below camp up to 5500 feet (struggling up to 5800) on S. slope. Canyons carry species higher & lower but this seems a fair average zone line. & well marked by plants, birds & mammals. - See note book for species Cratogeomys hills & Dipodomys spectabilis mounds come up to 5500. 

Found a few small rain pools of stale water. The country is extremely barren of water but covered with good grass.

[[underlined]] Aug. 27 [[/underlined]]. Broke camp at 8 AM & climbed the long, stony hill to top of main ridge of Guadalupe Mts & instead of retracing our old route turned to the north for about 10 miles along the crest of the range then turned east down a long ridge & struck the edge of valley just north of Last Chance Canyon at a goat ranch (Ed Burlesons) 40 miles from Carlsbad.

Aneroid at camp 6200, on ridge 6900, where we start down ridge to valley 6000, at ranch 5300.
Came about 20 miles over stony road.

To north the range runs lower with less timber but we could not see into the low gap in the range.

[[underlined]] Aug. 28 [[/underlined]]. Followed down valley to Mosbies Spring & camped, about 20 miles.

Aneroid 5300 in morning, 45 at Mosbies Spr. 

[[underlined]] Aug. 29 [[/underlined]]. Followed down Dark Canyon to near Carlsbad & camped at Water pump. Sent wagon to town for supplies & mail. Came 20 miles, Aneroid at Mosbies Spr., 45, at pump 3600, about 100 feet above Carlsbad.

[[underlined]] Aug. 30 [/underlined]]. Moved camp down to the Bowles ranch, 7 miles S. of Carlsbad, & engaged board with Mr. McIntosh.
