[[underlined]] May 23 [//underlined]] - Went out to camp near Mr. Motts place 8 miles north of town on [[strikethrough]] sout [[/strikethrough]] west side of Pecos River. Surber went back to ranch to bring out hack.

[[underlined]] May 24 [//underlined]] - Sunday. Set traps around camp. Surber returned toward night.

[[underlined]] May 25 [//underlined]], Made up skins in forenoon & in P.M. took photographs and hunted

[[underlined]] May 26 [//underlined]]. Followed down the gulch from camp about 2 miles to where it joins the Pecos river in a rough sandstone canyon 100 to 300 feet deep. The gulch is a side cannon 50 to 150 feet deep with a number of springs and deep pools but no running stream. The walls are sandstone cliffs, full of caves & holes & breaks. Here and there a layer of clay is found & in one of these we found fossil wood & bones.
