scattered mesquites, a few Opuntia lepticaulis, Opuntia engelmani, Cereus [[line]] Cereus aeneacanthus?, Mammillaria heyderi?, and [[blank]].

Dipodomys spectabilis is common over valleys & to top of high ridges & Perognathus gilvus? is common near the gulch at Motts ranch.

A pair of Calipepla squamata are breeding near our camp.

The country is old & has been inhabited by the Mexicans for ages. Old adobe & rock walls are often seen & there are ranches at every bit of good water, (or drinkable water.) tho the best is alkaline.

Sheep are herded over the roughest country. Cattle & horses find a living on the short grass of the plains.
