[[underlined]] June 29. [[/underlined]] Started early and came to Gallinas Springs post office, store & ranch in about 2 miles. Then crossed over a high open ridge and down to the Pecos Valley at [[Casouse?]], then up the river to Antone Chico, crossed the Pecos and went about 6 miles up over the juniper and nut pine slopes [[strikethrough]] so[[/strikethrough]] west of the river on the La Questa road. In all came about 25 miles entirely in Upper Sonoran zone and with the aneroid reading at Gallinas Spring about 6000, on the ridges about 6200 and at Antone Chico about 6000. Found no trace of mesquite or any Lower Sonoran plant. Heard blue quail in Gallinas Valley and Amphispiza bilineata [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]]in the Pecos Valley.

Saw the first chipmunk near Antone Chico & saw Lepus arizonae.

The Pecos Valley is largely cultivated and irrigated in little patches. The Mexican adobe houses are so thick the valley seems like a town all along & [[Casouse?]] and Antone Chico are considerable towns. Peaches, cherries, & apples are extensively cultivated but hail has damaged some of the fruit.
