West of Glorietta the gulch [[insert]] (Apache Cañon) [[/insert]] down which we follow is dry & rough & uninteresting till near Canoñcita, where a little spring creek comes in & there are pretty spots & ranches. Then we leave the creek & railroad & turn N.W. Made a dry camp and set traps for Perognathus. We are still 15 miles from Santa Fe. 

[[underline]] July 5. [[/underline]] Drove in to Santa Fe, but as it was Sunday could not get our mail or supplies. Camped in an open lot under cottonwood trees by the creek in about the center of town, between the state house & post office. 
From our camp in Apache Canyon we first climb a long hill (250 feet), and then down & up gulches and over foothill ridges and open mesas till we reach Santa Fe at 7000 feet in a gulch bottom of the foothills, between the Rio Grande & the Mts. 
At the highest point on the road, about 7500 feet, we came into the lower edge of Pinus ponderosa, but
