valley up to about the 84^[[insertion]] 00 [[/insertion]] foot contour line.
The valley is semiarid, covered with grass & several species of Bigelovia (see specimens), Guterrizia, Artemisia frigida & (filifolia?) & ludoviciana. The streams coming in from the side canyons form meadow where a good deal of hay is cut, the uplands are used for pastures. Most of the ranches are in the middle and [[strikethrough]] east [[/strikethrough]] north end of valley near Elizabethtown which is a mining center. The hills around it are full of prospect holes and washed out places but most of the present mining is done by dredging from the creek bed.
The whole valley & its borders are Transition zone. But little farming is done in it. Hay & stock are the main products. Some grain is raised & good turnips, baggies & beets.
Transition zone extends over the Pass on warm slopes, but Canadian zone comes down on both sides on cold slopes, down to edge of open valley or about 8500 feet in places on the east side and down to about 8500 feet on N.E. slopes on the west side.
