big, rough gulch with mainly barren sides. The only timber in sight as far up as I went is scattered nut pine & juniper, but on a high ridge [[strikethrough] 8 or 10 miles [[/strikethrough]] south of the canyon & 8 or 10 miles from Canyon City I could see tall trees and yellow aspens 3000 or 4000 feet above me.
Canyon City at 5300 feet is in the midst of Upper Sonoran zone which reaches up over the slopes and foothills to 1000 or 2000 feet above. The slopes are so barren & rough it is not easy to get a zone limit.

[[underline]] Oct. 6 [[/underline]] Got a horse & rode up the Garden Park road about 7 or 8 miles & about 100 feet above town - did not get out of Upper Sonoran, but a gale of wind blew all day. The air was so full of dust & sand & stones that I could hardly see & only one chipmunk was seen. It was nearly 1000 feet above town & was a large one of the same as 3 others caught in traps on the hill just back of the penitentiary, only half a mile from town.
