[[underline]] Gold Hill [[/underline]]

[[underline]] Oct. 7 [[/underline]] - Got up to catch the 5 o'clock train, which did not come till 8:30, and came around by Pueblo Denver & Boulder to Gold Hill. Made the last 4 miles from Salina up to 1700 feet to Gold Hill by stage after dark on a cold night & went shivering to bed in an old half abandoned hotel where I could not get anything to eat. An old Irish woman in a log cabin across the gulch got me some supper after 8 o'clock, so I did not have to go to bed hungry as at first seemed necessary.
At Boulder we left the plains & followed up a rocky gulch that I could see the outlines of by moonlight but it was too dark to see where Upper Sonoran zone left off & Transition began.

[[underline]] Oct. 8 [[/underline]] - Found myself in an old half abandoned mining camp at 8300 feet on top of a ridge that comes down from the big snow range to the west. Ward is in plain view on top of the same ridge 8 miles to the west
