[[underline]]Sept.21[[/underline]]. Took a saddle horse and started at 6:30 up the canyon of the San Mateos. Followed old road about 6 miles up beautiful canyon and good trail about 4 miles farther to heart of old crater, where I left my horse and went to the top of the highest peak, about 1000 or 1500 feet on foot. The slope was gradual & I could have ridden to the top but for letting my horse rest.

From the top of the peak I had a superb view of the country all around. The whole west slope of the James Mts., & Gallinas north of these of the Chacra Mesa & country north of it to the snow covered range of S. Western Colorado, the long black range to the N.W. on the Navajo Res., the whole great mass of black forested Zuni Mts, the Black range & Mogollons to the S.W. the Datels & Magdalenas to the S. & the Rio Grande Valley & mts. east of it. Looking down on the nearer mesas around the San Mateos & on the Sierra Chivatos I could with the glass distinguish yellow pines
