could also be arranged if the candidates' commitments require it; however, it is envisioned the the equivalent of one or two full-year awards would be made in the first year. If the Regents' Fellowship Program shows real worth to the Institution and the academic world, it is expected that each year's competition would produce a good number of candidates. It is hoped that the equivalent of more than one full-year fellowship would be available to take advantage of opportunities for distinguished visitors each year.

The Smithsonian would provide stipend support of $30,000 per year or, for those Fellows bringing partial salary, would match such support with Institutional funds not to exceed $30,000. Such an arrangement would ensure that scholars on sabbatical leave would not suffer a loss of salary upon their appointment. Additionally, modest travel, publication, and other appropriate allowances would be offered. Finally, provision for research and clerical assistance not to exceed $15,000 would be made. The annual cost of a Fellow would thus be unlikely to exceed $50,000.

The Office of Fellowships and Grants would provide administrative support in the selection and award of Regents' Fellowships.
