[[underlined]] Equal Opportunity Program [[/underlined]]

This report covers the Institution's Equal Opportunity Program for the approximate period of calendar year 1978.

1. [[underlined]] Affirmative Actions Plans [[/underlined]] - Affirmative action plans for handicapped persons and for employment were approved by the Civil Service Commission. The plan for the handicapped provides for a systematic process to accommodate the special needs of handicapped individuals and to integrate the program into our overall personnel system. Emphasis is given to the training and evaluation of supervisors to meet this need. Substantial amounts of funds are budgeted annually to correct architectural barriers to building accessibility for staff and visitors. The employment action plan focuses on further recruitment of minorities and women into the work force, particularly into scientific and curatorial positions. Toward this end we have under study the possible use of carefully designed undergraduate and graduate co-operative education programs with colleges and universities.

2. [[underlined]] Percentages of Employment [[/underlined]] - We have continued our efforts to increase the percentage of women and minorities in the Institution's work force, and processes which will encourage minorities to apply have been adopted. As pointed out in the May 1977 report to the Regents, the major area failing to improve at that time was the employment of women. Over the past year, however, the situation has improved with the number of women employees increasing from 1,291 to 1,387, a modest percentage increase from 33.4% to 34.6%.
