work will require an additional $450,000, of which $200,000 will be requested in the FY 1980 budget. The balance of repair funds will be included in future year requests.

[[underlined]] Museum of Natural History Fire Protection Program [[/underlined]]

Analysis and design of a comprehensive fire protection and detection system for the Natural History Building is 75% complete; the architectural/engineering contract for this work will cost about $241,000. This contract will provide a phased plan for needed improvements, including sprinkler systems, smoke detection and alarms, water distribution systems and fire doors and exits. Construction costs of perhaps several million dollars will be evaluated later for inclusion in the Institution's FY 1981 R&R budget request.

[[underlined]] Renwick Gallery Exterior Repairs [[/underlined]]

Since the restoration of the Renwick Gallery in 1968, further deterioration of the exterior stonework has presented a hazard to public safety and has accelerated water penetration. An amount of $300,000 was available in FY 1977-78 to analyze the facade problems in greater detail, with the expectation that actual repairs could also be initiated with these funds. Further study of the causes of deterioration, environmental impact, possible repair materials and methods proved, however, that the problems are far more complex than originally anticipated. Several solutions are being considered which involve the use of precast concrete or natural stone, and construction costs are now estimated to be substantially higher than predicted earlier.
