(3) Special Programs, a new line item, includes units previously shown under Science (International Environmental Science Program, Fellowships and Grants, Research Awards), History and Art (American Studies and Folklife Program), Public Service (Symposia and Seminars, Elementary and Secondary Education), and Museum Programs (Collections Management/Inventory Program) in order to coincide with our presentation to Congress;

(4) Associates Programs and Business Management are displayed as a separate line item. Most of the expenses of these activities are directly related to generating revenue and are therefore netted from gross income in the "Funds Applied" section; income and expenditures by unit are shown on Schedule F;

(5) Facilities Services (previously Support Activities) includes the Offices of Protection, Facilities Planning, and Plant Services;

(6) The Unrestricted Trust Fund allotments for Fellowships (supported by federal funds in prior years), Collections Acquisition, Scholarly Studies and Education Outreach ($2.0 million/year), and small Fluid Research grants ($200,000/year) are now all shown under transfers to special purpose funds since amounts unexpended in any fiscal year are to carry over to the following year. When expended, these funds will be accounted for in appropriate benefiting organization.

In addition, Schedules G and H on Special Purpose and Restricted Trust Funds have been redesigned to provide greater information on the income and expense of these funds by organizational units.
