A total of $4,000,000 in unrestricted trust funds has been approved by the Regents for allocation to Smithsonian units for collections acquisition ($2,000,000), scholarly projects ($1,000,000), and educational outreach ($1,000,000). Awards made through August 1, 1979, are as follows:

               A workshop for the scientists involved in the study of the recent eruption of Soufriere volcano on St. Vincent in the West Indies. Data will be integrated into a case history of the volcano's relationship and effect on the surrounding environment.

$40,500     National Zoological Park (John F. Eisenberg)
               Accelerate and interrelate current studies in the areas of vocal, olfactory, and visual communication methods in animals.

$10,107     National Zoological Park (Chris Wemmer and Larry Collins)
               Investigate Celebes Civet reproduction and social behavior in captivity and survey distribution of the species on Sulawesi, Indonesia.
